Baptism

The Role & Requirements of the
Godparent

The Sacrament of Baptism requires the selection of at least one official Godparent, but two (one from each sex) can serve. Parents should ensure that the person(s) they desire to serve in this role for their children are FULLY QUALIFIED BEFORE asking them. No more than two official Godparents can be listed in the Baptismal Register.
Although certainly an’ honor’ to be selected and serve as a Godparent, the role is not merely ‘honorary.’ Because Godparents serve in an important and official role not only for the child(ren) but also for the Church, they must:
  1. Be at least be 16 years of age themselves;

  2. Have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist;

  3. Live a life in harmony with the Church, which means they actively practice their faith, support and are involved in the life of their parish.

Parishioners from Ss Peter and Paul Church seeking to serve as Godparents will be known to our parish staff and should complete the form entitled Requesting a Sponsor Certificate.
Those who live in other parishes must be able to get a sealed Godparent Certification, signed by the Pastor of their home parish or the Pastor from the parish where they actually practice their faith.
Parents must ensure that the Godparent(s) qualify before submitting the name. Those who cannot present the official certification will not be able to serve as a Godparent.  In certain circumstances, an individual may be able to be listed and serve as a Christian Witness, but only if an other Godparent is one who is ‘fully Initiated’ and qualified, as noted above.
