The Role & Requirements of the
Godparent
The Sacrament of Baptism requires the selection of at least one official Godparent, but two (one from each sex) can serve. Parents should ensure that the person(s) they desire to serve in this role for their children are FULLY QUALIFIED BEFORE asking them. No more than two official Godparents can be listed in the Baptismal Register.

Although certainly an’ honor’ to be selected and serve as a Godparent, the role is not merely ‘honorary.’ Because Godparents serve in an important and official role not only for the child(ren) but also for the Church, they must:

-
At least 16 years of age.
-
Not the parent of the one to be baptized/confirmed.
-
Initiated with the three Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation.
-
Firmly believe in Jesus Christ and lead a Christian life in keeping with my Baptism.

Parents must ensure that the Godparent(s) qualify before submitting the name. In certain circumstances, an individual may be able to be listed and serve as a Christian Witness, but only if an other Godparent is one who is ‘fully Initiated’ and qualified, as noted above.
